There is a new(ish) movement out there called Occupy Wall Street. They have come out with a list of one demands (yes, that is pluralized correctly), and are taking up a good bit of the news. Their main message, as far as I can tell, is that they're angry and they want something done about it.
Here is OWS's problem, they don't have a consistent viewpoint. Anyone who can speak intelligently in support of the movement does not speak about any of their "one demands". The mass majority of the supporters are just a mob of angry people. They don't really quite know why they're angry, but they do know that the others around them are angry, and they are finally fitting in with the crowd. For their whole lives they've wanted to be different, just like everyone else, and now they are achieving that goal.
Here is what I was getting to with the title of this post: self nomination. If somebody identifies themselves as part of this movement, I can safely choose to ignore any economic or social rhetoric they spew and not have wasted any of my time. As a matter of fact, they would have saved me the time and effort of listening to them because of their self nomination. That's not to say I won't listen, I'm always up for telling someone they're wrong, but at least now I can make an informed decision.
